Yeah, it’s that time of year. It’s (hopefully) starting to warm up, sunny days, greening of the trees, greener grass. And looking forward to that reward for surviving the winter – flowers blooming.
This year has been an especially hard winter for many of us, especially the east coast. Sometimes that especially hard season can be a blessing. When things in our lives are annoying or uncomfortable or just aggravating, many times we will just keep moving.
We are so busy dealing with the daily din, we don’t even hear the pain in our lives, burying it. The pain of unfulfilled dreams, the hurt of mistreatment or being ignored, the draining away of hope that situations/people in our lives will finally change, not to mention the pure crap of negativity drains the energy out of us.
Sometimes, the pain has to get really bad before we recognize it, recognize that we are not really dealing with what is going on. So the pain of a really tough winter in our life can wake us to what we are doing.
We keep burying it all, trying not to notice the smell of the composting of our life. Or if we do, tamp it down. Like tamping down the earth over a tulip bulb.
That bulb is the true us. The bulb that is buried in dirt and rocks and manure will sit there for a long time. And when the time is right, that bulb starts changing. It starts sending down roots and sending up leaves, reaching for sun and nutrients. The more it reaches out, the more it grows. And eventually, it’s not a bulb anymore, it is a beautiful flower.
So how do we take that story and make it work for us, for our lives? Well, I’m going to guess you and I both have enough of the dirt, rocks and manure in our lives; those tough things in our lives, those people who don’t lift us up, situations that aren’t fair. There is rarely a lack of problems.
But we can choose to start moving, growing, reaching out for food for our soul and dreams, moving toward the warmth, the sunshine. As we take in the goodness of choosing to accept ourselves as we are, working to identify what we “want to be” and realize that we are beautiful. Beautiful now as a bulb. And beautiful as we grow and bloom.
Today, take a step toward that blooming. Realize that you may not be who you want to be but you’re not who you were – you are a bulb in transition. You may have dirt and crud, and even crap on you, but that can change.
And you can use that to make you stronger. You are stronger than you know. You are wiser than you know.
Now is no longer the time for tamping down the feelings. It is spring. Be brave, lift your head, move toward the sunshine of your goals. There will be rain, but keep moving toward the sun. And away from what (or who) doesn’t belong in your life.
Be who you are – funny, quiet, loud, creative, honest, whatever. And be more of it. If you have been hiding your feelings, dreams, loves.
Today is the day to show your colors. Write it down, share it with a safe friend, look yourself in the mirror and say it out loud. Then start little steps toward it.
Today is the day to declare you. Start blooming!
