What if you thought of your life story as more of a series of snapshots, or a current snapshot? Rather than a History Channel Video?
What if you edited your “Biography” as an photography editor would, choosing an array of significant moments captured in snapshots. Some serious, some silly, some flattering, some showing room for growth.
Some would be beautiful memories or engaging stories. Some would be examples of strength and wisdom. Some would be examples of how far you’ve come from bad choices and embarrassing moments. While others would clarify what is really important to you and what you’re proud of. Others might just be silly and fun.
The thing about snapshots, good or bad, is that they signify and remind us that life is just a series of moments in time. Ever changing, ever moving, ever refocusing. Unlike the History Channel videos, we don’t have to see and experience every moment, good or bad. Every mistake, every bored stretch, every missed detail.
Instead, we choose the snapshots we want to focus on, the ones we want to remember, and we gather them into a treasure box. Whether that’s a special chest or an album or even a shoebox waiting to be sorted, they wait for us to deem them significant or silt – destined to be dumped somewhere else.
It doesn’t mean we dump every sad or difficult picture; like someone we lost or a time that was stressful but made us stronger. It means it is another decision about whether to be grateful for something in that moment of our time. Or whether to move on to the next snapshot. Because we don’t keep every picture, every memory, every micro-moment of time, close at hand. Some keep moving to less and less desirable storage. Others get pitched right away if they’re not relevant, not serving us well or we’re ready to let that go.
So what mental and emotional “snapshots” of your life are you keeping in your treasured album? What of those would you want to share with others? What do you want to do in this snapshot of time? How do you want to remember your life so far?
You’re the editor, is it time to turn the page in your album?
